Imitation Jewelry
How to keep your imitation jewelry from losing it's luster
Unlike fine jewelry that's made with materials like gold, platinum, diamonds, and gemstones that can cost a fortune, fashion jewelry is crafted with more common components like plated metals, semi-precious stones, beads, and glass, making it more affordable and guilt-free.

These materials are used as alternatives to create a similar look and style to fine jewelry without the high cost of solid gold and diamonds. How quickly jewelry tarnishes depends on a number of factors - the way you care for them, your skin composition, the air around you, and the processes and materials used to make them. You can minimize signs of wear and extend their longevity by properly caring for them.

1. Store it properly
Because exposure to the simplest things like the moisture in the air can wear down your jewels, it's important to store them properly. By storing your jewels in a Ziploc bag and with the air removed, the metal won't be able to oxidize from the air. You can also store it in a cloth pouch or bag.

2. Keep it dry
Avoid contact with moisture and liquids. This includes putting on lotions, washing your hands, a spritz of perfume, and sweating with your jewels on. If you get your jewels wet by accident, wipe them dry immediately.

3. Don't pile up
Metals and gemstones can cut and scratch each other. Never store your jewelry in a pile. Minimize scratches and tarnishing by storing them separately.

4. Last on, first off
Always put your fashion jewelry on last after you’ve done your makeup, put on lotion, and sprayed yourself with perfume. Take your jewelry off when you’re done for the day. Don’t sleep with it on.

5. Wipe it off after wearing all-day
Although this is definitely an extra step, this will really prolong your jewelry’s life. After wearing it all day your sweat and germs in the environment are all over your jewelry. Give it a quick wipe with a soft cloth.
